A Wedding in Selargius
The ancient marriage rites of Selargius, celebrated during the month of September, create a harmonious and joyful event not only for the newlyweds but for the whole community who is called upon to participate. The "fanciness" of the marriage is clear even on the day before the celebration, that when finished the so-called "prize of the bride", that is to say the transfer of the bride's furniture in the house where the bridge will go to live with the groom. The day of the ritual the whole town prepares for the party: balconies are draped with rich tapestries, there is a sweet perfume of flowers in the air, and sweet are distributed along the streets.

The various events connected to the festival, are organized throughout the island every year on April 28th to recall the “Sardinian Vespers”, that is the popular revolt of 28 April 1794, when the Piedmont governors were thrown away from Cagliari and viceroy Balbiano, after the Turin government’s refusal to meet the island’s request. The Sardinian people were asking for a reserve in the military and civil jobs, and greater autonomy in the decision of the local running class. The Piedmontese government refused to accept any request, therefore the town middle-class, with the help of the rest of the population, set off the insurrection.

On April 25th Cagliari celebrates with all sacredness Our Lady of Bonaria. The ancient Sanctuary Bonaria is one of the few evidences built on the hill by order of Infant Alfonso of Aragona who, in 1324, conquered the city of Cagliari. Subsequently, in 1335, the church was given to the friars of The Order of Our Lady of the Mercede who built the convent that is still used to accommodate the monks. In 1370 a storm hit the sea just opposite the city of Cagliari and surprised a ship coming from Spain.
