A Wedding in Selargius
The ancient marriage rites of Selargius, celebrated during the month of September, create a harmonious and joyful event not only for the newlyweds but for the whole community who is called upon to participate. The "fanciness" of the marriage is clear even on the day before the celebration, that when finished the so-called "prize of the bride", that is to say the transfer of the bride's furniture in the house where the bridge will go to live with the groom. The day of the ritual the whole town prepares for the party: balconies are draped with rich tapestries, there is a sweet perfume of flowers in the air, and sweet are distributed along the streets.
The future spouses put on traditional clothing in the farm houses in Selargius called pollas campidanesi: the groom carries an elegant costume of black and white while the future bride's garment is richer and multicoloured. Right after they get dressed the grooms receive blessings from their respective parents who throw grain and salt on their heads - symbols of richness – with the final shattering of the plate on the ground.
So, the reunion takes place: the groom reaches his fiancée's house with people in front of him playing an instrument called “launeddas” and a procession of friends and relatives behind him who are met united with the procession of the women in the churchyard. A rich banquet is served in the house of the bride.... Before the newly weds are allowed to cross the threshold of their new house, the women of the neighbourhood throw grains of wheat.
In the church of the proposition it celebrant comes the ceremony; therefore it is brought us in house of the bride where a rich banquet will be served. The women of the neighbourhood throw grains of wheat on the threshold of the newlyweds' house before they can cross.
