The Shipwrecked Madonna
A moment of the underwater ceremony
The party, dedicated to the celebration of The Shipwrecked Madonna, is held in Villasimius on July 17th. The event hinges around the procession that, leaving from the parochial church of San Raffaele, arrives first to the port for then to land - literally - to The Island of the Cabbages, Isola dei Cavoli. The procession culminates when a crown of flowers is placed close to the sunken statue Virgin Mary with her child created by sculptor Pinuccio Sciola in 1979. The procession is then followed by plates of fish and traditional folkloristic shows.
